Description

Whether you are early in your counseling career or you have been providing counseling services for some time, the Distance Supervision: An Introduction micro-course can help you move your counseling career forward by providing the knowledge needed when entering a distance counseling supervisory relationship from the perspectives of both the supervisee and the supervisor.

This micro-course provides a broad introduction to the skills and responsibilities associated with receiving and providing counseling supervision from a distance and how to to gain the most from an effective distance counseling supervisory relationship through real-world scenarios and interactive content.

Note: This micro-course is designed to provide an introduction to the concepts of delivering counseling supervision at a distance. Please check with your local state board of examiners, secretary of state office, or other agency that governs the licensing and delivery of counseling supervision services in your state to determine the certification and licensing requirements you may need to fulfill to offer such services to the public.

Faculty Bio

Dr. Cory Viehl, LPC, NCC, ACS

Dr. Cory Viehl, LPC, NCC, ACS is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Georgia as well as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) through NBCC. He earned his PhD in Counselor Education and Practice with a cognate in multicultural supervision and practice from Georgia State University and was selected as an NBCC Minority Fellow in 2014. He has been in clinical practice for 12 years in various settings including IOP, college counseling centers, and private practice. His research and professional interests center on LGBTQI+ individuals in counseling, counselor education, and supervision. More specifically, his publications focus on sexual and gender diverse counselors and their experiences of minority stress, compassion fatigue, burnout, and coping.

Curriculum

Distance Supervision: An Introduction
In this micro-course you will explore concepts in distance supervision, including its purpose and the professional ethics that govern its practice. With the focus on providing optimal client care and supervisee skill building in counseling, you examine the roles and responsibilities of the supervisor and supervisee in an effective supervisory relationship and how it relates to meeting the needs of clients and supervisees.

Accreditation

Walden University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 4546. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Walden University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
